HISTORY

The American Association of University Women was founded in 1881 by 17 college-educated women who believed that education could change a woman’s life. The beliefs of this small community of women live on today through AAUW.

AAUW is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls. Since our founding, we have expanded our network to over 170,000 members, 1,000 branches throughout alI 5O states, and 800 college and university partners.

AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day – educational, social, economic, and political. AAUW Funds, consisting of fellowships and grants, provide financial support to advance education, research and self-development for women and to foster equity and societal change. In addition, a Legal Advocacy Fund supports women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination. The Leadership and Training Institute offer specialized programs for our members and college/university partners. We seek to empower women.
